Travel load and burnout

Alongside the weekly fatigue, the player has a long-term workload meter, 0–100. It builds with everything a pro life asks of them and recovers only with rest. A heavy workload costs form, composure, recovery and training, and raises the chance of a strain. At burnout level, a doctor or the mental coach steps in.

Everything is tunable in data/load.json: one settings object (or an array of them). The editor schema is the travel load settings reference. Every field is optional: a field you leave out keeps the game's default. Several mods can supply one. They apply in load order, and later fields win (per key for areas, continents and timeZones, per pair for pairs). Like population settings, load settings follow the installed packs in existing saves too.

How it builds#

SourceLoad
An event you playevent.base, plus event.perMatch per match, plus event.perDay per extra day you're still in it (deep runs cost more)
The trip to itBy distance (below), plus jet lag and travel.nightAway per night. Back-to-back days in one country are one trip
An exhibition nightexhibition.base plus exhibition.perTravelDay, and its trip
Media dutiesmedia.interview per interview, media.press per press conference
Weeks in a row on itbackToBack.perWeek for each busy week before this one, up to backToBack.max

Distance#

From the player's nationality to the venue's country:

TripSettingDefault
Home (a pub or club: lighter)travel.home, travel.localVenue0.5, 0.2
Home, a near part of a country with regionstravel.home ( whatever the venue)0.5
Home, a far part of a country with regionstravel.area1.5
Same area (areas)travel.area1.5
Same continent (continents)travel.continent3
Another continenttravel.longHaul6
Jet lagtravel.perHour per hour of time difference beyond travel.jetLagFrom, up to travel.jetLagMax0.6 from 2 h, up to 5

pairs sets an exact value for two countries (either way), in place of the area or continent value; jet lag still applies. Countries in no continent count as the same continent (no long haul). Where a country is (its area, continent and timeZone) is said once, on its nation record: the core's load settings no longer repeat it, and the travel fares read the same records. A load record may still give areas, continents and timeZones; they win over the nation records, for a mod that wants the workload to see a country differently.

A travel manager's travelLoad hook takes a share off every trip (see staff).

How it recovers#

At each week's end, the meter drops by a share of itself:

WeekSettingDefault
You played or travelledrecovery.busy10%
Nothing onrecovery.rest, plus recovery.restFlat25%, plus 4
A week off (4+ days of a holiday)recovery.holiday, plus recovery.holidayFlat45%, plus 10
The winter break (new season)recovery.offSeason50%

The team's burnout hook (the mental coach, and a little from the physio and fitness coach) makes each week's recovery that share faster.

A week off can be booked from the Calendar's schedule strip for any of the next eight weeks. It costs holiday.cost (default £350). You skip that week's events (entries are refunded; league nights still go ahead) and can't take exhibitions. Stories can give time off with the holiday action.

Bands and what they do#

bands sets where each band starts: busy 40, tired 60, overloaded 75, burnout 90. From tired up, effects apply week by week:

EffectMeaningTiredOverloadedBurnout
accuracyThrowing looser by this fraction−0.01−0.02−0.035

  "effects": { "burnout": { "injury": 0.03, "composure": -5 } },
  "recovery": { "busy": 0.12 }
}

The game's tuning: a sensible pro schedule (three weekends in four, some of them abroad, the odd exhibition) peaks in the 40s; every Pro Circuit and European Tour weekend plus bookings reaches overloaded after about seven weeks and burnout after nine.

Stories#

Stories can check the workload with loadMin / loadMax, change it with the load effect and give time off with the holiday action. See Stories. The core pack's travel and burnout stories are in data/events/narrative/load.json, including the burnout arc (core.narrative.burnout-doctor, core.narrative.burnout-mental-coach and their follow-up).

Old saves#

A career from before workload starts on an estimate from its last eight weeks (events played, exhibition nights), and picks up the load settings from the installed packs.
